Homily for Our Lady of Guadalupe based on Luke 1: 39-45
“Blessed are you that believed what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” From childhood Mary must have sensed that she was special to God. No doubt she had confided this to Elizabeth before the visit of Angel Gabriel. Probably Elizabeth, an older relative with much wisdom, encouraged her in her life with God? Finally, the Angel Gabriel appeared and announced the mission God had for Mary. She would bear the Christ Child. No wonder Mary wanted to be with Elizabeth to talk about this! She needed to talk. She needed to hear her cousin say: Don’t be afraid, just as Angel Gabriel did.
It works this way with us, too, no? We sense: God is calling me to something. We pray – as Mary did. We follow in faith– as Mary did. God will make it clear in time. We trust that God’s word to us will be fulfilled. Our Lady of Guadalupe is with us, her dear, little children. What she said to St. Juan Diego, she says to us. Don’t be afraid, my dear little one. I am here, your Mother. We trust in her and in her Son. We follow in faith. Then, we encourage others – especially our little ones, our children, no? Virgin of Guadalupe, pray for us – now, in the future, and at the hour of our death. Amen.
